Στιγμές αγωνίας για την εθνική Κύπρου Χάντμπολ στην Εσθονία – Ανατράπηκε το λεωφορείο της αποστολής, ευτυχώς χωρίς σοβαρούς τραυματισμούς
Στιγμές έντονης αγωνίας έζησε τα ξημερώματα του Σαββάτου η εθνική ομάδα χάντμπολ της Κύπρου στην Εσθονία, όταν το λεωφορείο που μετέφερε την αποστολή από το Ταλίν προς το Πόλβα βγήκε εκτός πορείας και ανετράπη στον αυτοκινητόδρομο Ταλίν–Τάρτου, κοντά στην περιοχή Νεανουρμέ. Στο όχημα επέβαιναν 23 άτομα, ανάμεσά τους αθλητές και μέλη του τεχνικού επιτελείου.
Οι ιδιαίτερα δύσκολες καιρικές συνθήκες φαίνεται πως συνέβαλαν στο ατύχημα, με τις εσθονικές αρχές να κινητοποιούνται άμεσα. Σύμφωνα με την Εσθονική Ομοσπονδία Χειροσφαίρισης, δύο μέλη της κυπριακής αποστολής μεταφέρθηκαν προληπτικά στο Πανεπιστημιακό Νοσοκομείο του Τάρτου για εξετάσεις, ενώ οι υπόλοιποι συνέχισαν το ταξίδι τους με λεωφορείο αντικατάστασης και έφτασαν με ασφάλεια στο Πόλβα.

Λίγο αργότερα, ακόμη οκτώ άτομα προσήλθαν στα επείγοντα του Πόλβα με ενοχλήσεις, καθώς το σοκ του ατυχήματος έγινε αισθητό όταν «έπεσε η αδρεναλίνη». Η γενική γραμματέας της εσθονικής ομοσπονδίας, Πίριε Όρασσον, επιβεβαίωσε ότι βρίσκεται σε συνεχή επικοινωνία με την κυπριακή πλευρά και την Ευρωπαϊκή Ομοσπονδία Χειροσφαίρισης, υπογραμμίζοντας πως προτεραιότητα είναι η υγεία των αθλητών.
Η αστυνομία της Εσθονίας ανέφερε ότι ο οδηγός του λεωφορείου ήταν νηφάλιος, με πλήρη άδεια και κατάλληλα ελαστικά, ενώ τα αίτια του ατυχήματος διερευνώνται. Το όχημα ανασύρθηκε λίγες ώρες αργότερα από το σημείο, χωρίς να αναφερθούν περαιτέρω προβλήματα.
Ο επαναληπτικός αγώνας Εσθονία – Κύπρος για τα προκριματικά του Euro2028 είναι προγραμματισμένος για το βράδυ της Κυριακής, ωστόσο η διεξαγωγή του θα εξαρτηθεί από την ιατρική κατάσταση των παικτών, με τους διοργανωτές να τονίζουν ότι ο αγώνας περνά σε δεύτερη μοίρα μπροστά στην ασφάλεια των μελών της αποστολής.
